The junior competition at the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships kicked off Wednesday, Jan. 20 at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Editor’s note: This story titled “Filling the Void” appeared in the January 2011 issue of SKATING magazine, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that claimed the lives of the entire 1961 U.S. World Team. Pairs bronze medalists at the 1960 Olympics, Nancy (Ludington Graham) and Ron Ludington (now deceased), describe the heartbreak of losing their teammates and friends in the accident and how the deep void left in both the skater and coaching ranks was filled.

U.S. Figure Skating is currently celebrating its centennial anniversary. Not all superheros wear capes and not all superfans wear skates. There are plenty of people who contribute to the sport from the other side of the boards. Claudyne Cassella Hutchinson is a fixture in the audience at skating competitions domestically and internationally. She can sometimes be spotted in a signature blue scarf, but other times opts to blend in with the crowd. Even during this spectator-less season, this figure skating superfan’s presence has been known in the form of a cardboard cutout.
“We all fall. It’s how we get up that matters.”
Those 10 words serve as a mantra for athletes of all levels, across all sports.
They are also at the core of U.S. Figure Skating’s Get Up campaign.
On Monday, February 1, 2021, U.S. Figure Skating will invite people from around the United States to participate in the fifth annual National Get Up® Day presented by Guaranteed Rate. The day will be a celebration of those who embody the Get Up® spirit. On this day, people are encouraged to share their stories at WeGetUp.com, by using #WeGetUp or by contacting their local media outlet with their story, or the story of a friend or loved one, or an organization that is doing inspiring Get Up® work in their community.
