Team USA's Vincent Zhou and Madison Chock and Evan Bates are in medal position after the first day of events at NHK Trophy. The competition kicked off Friday and will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Zhou scored 99.51 points to earn the second-place spot after the men's short program in Tokyo. Opening with a quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination, Zhou performed four Level 4 elements in his program to "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" by Josh Groban.
Tomoki Hiwatashi scored 72.36 points in the short program to earn ninth place. His program to "Standard" by Leslie Odom Jr. featured a quad Salchow and two Level 4 spins.
Camden Pulkinen finished 11th in the men's short program with 55.53 points.
Japan's Shoma Uno is in first place with 102.58 points, and Junhwan Cha from the Republic of Korea is in third with 95.92 points.
In ice dance, Chock and Bates hold second place after the rhythm dance with a personal best 86.02 points. Their Billie Eilish program featured four Level 4 elements and positive grades of execution on all elements.
Russia's Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov are in first with 86.33 points. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain are in third with 76.43 points.
Alysa Liu is in fourth place after the women's short program with 67.72 points. Her program to "Gypsy Dance II" from Don Quixote featured three Level 4 spins and a Level 4 step sequence.
Amber Glenn is in sixth after the short program with 63.43 points. Her program to "Circles" by Greta Svabo Beck and "Experience" by Ludovico Einaudi featured two Level 4 spins.
Japan currently holds the top two spots in the women's event, with Kaori Sakamoto in first with 76.56 points and Mana Kawabe in second with 73.88 points. Young You from the Republic of Korea is in third with 68.08 points.
In the pairs event, Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc are in fourth with 70.75 points. Their program to music from The White Crow featured three Level 4 elements.
Audrey Lu and Misha Mitrofanov are in fifth with 64.95 points. Earning all positive grades of execution in their short program to a "Toxic" and "Survivor" remix by 2WEI/TMS, the tandem executed two Level 4 elements.
Russia's Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov are in first after the short program with 78.40 points. Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, also of Russia, are in second with 75.78 points. Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are third with 73.98 points.
