SEVEN HEADED TO JUNIOR GRAND PRIX SERIES IN LITHUANIA

Seven Americans are headed to the third event of the 2018 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series this week in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The event, known as the Amber Cup, starts on Thursday, Sept. 6, with the men’s and ladies short programs. The rhythm dance and ladies free skate will take place on Friday, Sept. 7. Competition will conclude with the men’s free skate and free dance on Saturday, Sept. 8.

In the ladies competition, Audrey Shin will skate in her first JGP series event. Shin made her international debut at the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy in 2017 where she placed seventh. She finished ninth in the junior field at the U.S. Championships last season.

Joseph Kang and Andrew Torgashev will represent the United States in the men’s field. Like Shin, Kang is also making his JGP series debut in Lithuania. Torgashev placed fourth at the JGP series opener this season in Bratislava, Slovakia. He captured the gold medal at the Philadelphia Summer International in August and qualified for the JGP Final last season.

The United States will have two entries in the ice dance competition. Avonley Nguyen and Vadym Kolesnik, who finished fifth and sixth in their two JGP series events last year, will make their season debut. The brother-sister duo of Oona and Gage Brown will make their international debut at the junior level in Lithuania. They claimed the bronze medal in the novice competition at the Bavarian Open last season and finished fifth in the novice competition at last year’s U.S. Championships.

Entering its 22nd season, the JGP Series consists of seven international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the seven scheduled events (pairs can compete in two of four designated events). The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, Dec. 6-9 in Vancouver. The ISU will stream the event live on its YouTube page.
