Nathan Chen (Salt Lake Figure Skating) won his fourth U.S. title on the final night of competition at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. The two-time World champion became the first man to win four straight U.S. titles since Brian Boitano (1985-88).
En route to his historic title, Chen opened with a strong quadruple flip-triple toe loop combination and went on to land four total quad jumps. His Rocketman free skate earned 216.04 points to tally 330.17 points overall and top the field by 37.29 points.
“I’m thrilled that I was able to stay on my feet for all of the jumps,” Chen said. “I was a little shaky here and there, but overall I was able to get through the program. I was pretty worried about stamina coming in here, so I’m glad I was able to get through. The audience definitely helped me with that and I’m really happy to be where I am.”
Jason Brown (Skokie Valley SC) claimed the silver medal at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, earning a personal-best 292.88 points overall. The 2014 Olympian opened his Schindler’s List free skate with a triple Axel-double toe loop combination and notched Level 4 marks for his four spinning elements to total 191.89, another personal best. Brown won his first U.S. title back in Greensboro in 2015.
“First off, Greensboro is just such a special place for me,” Brown said. “Hands down I have the most incredible memories and this crowd is just so amazing. To be able to come here, back to Greensboro five years later and be able to put out two standing ovation worthy programs, I’m so thrilled.”
Jumping from fifth to third place, Tomoki Hiwatashi (DuPage FSC) won the bronze medal with 278.08 overall. The 2019 pewter medalist also had a personal-best free skate, earning 183.87 in his routine to "Petrushka" by Igor Stravinsky. His skate included two quad jumps, including a quad toe loop-triple toe loop combination.
Vincent Zhou (SC of San Francisco) earned the pewter medal 275.23 points overall. In his first competition since September, the 2019 World bronze medalist tallied 180.41 points for his free skate to music from the Cloud Atlas soundtrack.
