Chen opened with quad flip and then finished his program strong, landing three straight combination jumps, including a quad toeloop-triple toeloop combination. He was also awarded three Level 4 spins.
He is the fourth men’s champion to win in back-to-back years since the event began in 1995.
Earlier in the day, Camden Pulkinen and Tomoki Hiwatashi finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Pulkinen, who led coming into the free skate, earned 117.37 points on Friday night to total 197.68 for the competition. Hiwatashi earned 128.32 points in his free skate for 190.80 total.
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue lead the senior ice dance competition after earning 80.53 points in Friday’s rhythm dance. Training mates Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker are sixth with 71.33 points. Both teams earned season best scores, behind Level 4 twizzles and a Level 4 lift.
In the junior rhythm dance, Avonley Nguyen and Vadym Kolesnik finished fifth in their first Junior Grand Prix Final. The duo earned 94.74 points in Friday’s free dance, totaling 158.47 points through two days of competition.
On Saturday, Team USA will close out the competition with the senior free dance and junior pairs free skate.
