Eight Americans represented Team USA in Italy this weekend for the final stop of the 2019 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series.
Ladies competitor Isabelle Inthisone and ice dance duo Katarina DelCamp and Ian Somerville both notched fourth place finishes which were the top American finishes this week.
Inthisone, skating in her second JGP event of the season, recorded a short program score of 58.50 and a free skate score of 108.97 en route to securing a fourth-place finish.
Kate Wang, who placed sixth at the JGP event in Russia, finished 11th with a combined score of 144.99.
Russians Kseniia Sinitsyna (215.58) and Anna Frolova (176.21) took the first two podium spots, with Sinitsyna winning gold and Frolova earning silver. Italian Alessia Tornaghi (175.93) grabbed the bronze medal.
In the ice dance, the United States picked up two top-five finishes. The duo of DelCamp and Somerville improved from their eighth-place finish in Russia by finishing fourth in Italy, scoring 58.06 in the rhythm dance and 88.99 in the free dance for a total score of 147.05. The brother-sister duo of Oona Brown and Gage Brown finished fifth with 146.15 total points. They received a score of 91.34 in the free dance, which was the second-highest free dance score in the field.
Russian duo Elizaveta Khudaibeedeiva and Andrew Filatov (164.92) finished first, Canada’s Natalie D’Alessandro and Bruce Waddel (152.76) placed second, and Russians Angelina Lazareva and Maksim Prokofiev (148.71) finished with bronze.
In the men’s event, Ilia Malinin led the way for the Americans, placing seventh.
After placing fourth in Lake Placid earlier this season, Malinin notched a score of 72.19 in the short program before scoring 131.28 in the free skate for 203.47 points overall.
Ohio native Matthew Nielsen finished 12th with a total score of 184.89.
Italy’s Daniel Grassl (241.53) won gold, while Russian Petr Gumennik (232.39) secure silver and Ivan Shmuratko (221.44) of the Ukraine took home bronze.
The United States has two entries qualified fo the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, which is comprised of the top six point-earners in each discipline. Alysa Liu will represent the United States in the ladies competition, while the ice dance duo of Avonley Nguyen and Vadym Kolesnik will compete in ice dance.
