Pairs Free Skate
Sarah Feng and TJ Nyman cracked the top-five in their second World Junior Championships appearance, improving on their eighth-place finish last season. The couple was awarded 104.47 points for their Elvis-themed free skate for a total score of 162.90. The couple was in sixth place after the short program and rallied to the fifth spot, securing three Level 4 elements, including a twist that received 1.46 points for its grade of execution.
Just behind their American counterparts, Laiken Lockley and Keenan Prochnow finished in sixth place in their World Junior debut with 159.54 total points. In their season's best free skate, the 2019 U.S. junior champions opened with a side-by-side double Axel-double toe loop combination and went on to notch three Level 4 elements, scoring 99.58 points.
Also making their World Junior debut, Kate Finster and Balazs Nagy placed 11th overall in the pairs competition with 132.29 points. Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the duo scored 81.99 points for their free skate, which included a Level 4 lift in the second half of the program.
Russian teams swept the pairs podium with Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov winning gold, Apollinariia Panfilova and Dmitry Rylov taking silver, and Polina Kostiukovich and Dmitrii Ialin earning bronze.
Rhythm Dance
Avonley Nguyen and Vadym Kolesnik lead the way for Team USA after the rhythm dance, finishing in fifth place with 65.18 points. The Michigan-based duo opened their tango with Level 4 twizzles followed by a Level 4 curve lift. The 2019 U.S. junior silver medalists scored grades of execution over 1.90 points for two of their five elements.
Newly crowned U.S. junior champions Caroline Green and Gordon Green are in eighth place after the rhythm dance, scoring 58.82 points. In just their third competition of the season, the sibling team closed their performance with a Level 4 rotating lift.
Just behind the Greens, 2019 U.S. junior bronze medalists Eliana Gropman and Ian Somerville placed ninth in the rhythm dance, notching 58.53 points. The Maryland-based team closed their program with a Level 4 curve lift followed by Level 4 twizzles.
The ice dance competition will conclude with the free dance on Saturday, March 9, starting at 4:30 p.m. ET.
