1. Isabeau Levito Has a New Mindset
In the cover story, 16-year-old Isabeau Levito reflects on her rise to stardom within the skating world after earning silver at her two Grand Prix events as well as the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, and bringing home her first U.S. title last season. Looking forward to this season, Levito is approaching her training with a new mindset by not putting too much pressure on herself to be perfect in practice. Thanks to touring with Stars on Ice and a newfound interest in journaling, Levito can confidently say she has now embraced her inner “girlboss.”
2. 2023 Humana Skate America Preview
Get ready for the start of the Grand Prix season with Skate America! On the roster of U.S. athletes set to compete are the ice dance team Caroline Green and Michael Parsons. Green and Parsons will make their season debut in Allen, Texas after finding success by earning silver at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and a sixth-place finish at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships last season. In 2019, it was Skate America where the two unofficially began their partnership and their confidence has grown every year since. Joining them to represent the United States are 2023 World champions in ice dance Madison Chock and Evan Bates, as well as 2022 Skate America men’s champion Ilia Malinin and 2023 U.S. women’s champion Isabeau Levito.
3. Celebrating SKATING Magazine’s 100th Anniversary
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of SKATING magazine! Not only is that an impressive milestone in itself, but over those 100 years, SKATING has been there to celebrate several milestones of U.S. Figure Skating. SKATING has been there to celebrate U.S. Figure Skating’s milestone anniversaries in 1948 (25 years), 1972 (50 years), 1996 (75 years) and 2021 (100 years). Each anniversary brought together some of the biggest names in the sport like Carol Heiss, Dr. Tenley Albright, Michelle Kwan, Dick Button and more!
4. Adult Corner – Honoring our Veterans
To celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 11, SKATING sat down with four skaters who started skating before, during and/or after serving our country in the military: Stephanie Kazior (Corporal E-4, U.S. Marine Corps), Mark Getman (First Lieutenant, Army National Guard), Lynn Stone (Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force) and Marie Sherry (CTM Petty Officer 2nd Class, U.S. Navy). Coming from four different branches of the military, they discuss their vastly different careers, their military service and what Veteran’s Day means to them.
5. Excel Final, National Showcase and U.S. Collegiate Championships Recaps
This summer was busy for several U.S. Figure Skating programs. Events were held for U.S. Figure Skating’s showcase, Excel and collegiate skating programs. These three events saw both returning champions and fresh faces earn titles. Ashlyn Olson earned her second consecutive Parade of Champions win at National Showcase and the duet-trio title alongside adult Parade of Champions winner Ashlee Pantano. University of Minnesota sophomore Wren Warne-Jacobsen returned to the U.S. Collegiate Championships to win her second consecutive senior women’s medal with gold.
