Intercollegiate competitions are governed by U.S. Figure Skating's Collegiate Skating Subcommittee. The country is divided into four conferences (Pacific Coast, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast).
- Skaters compete individually in short program, Excel free skate, Jr/Sr Championship free skate, solo pattern dance, solo free dance, and/or as part of a team in the team maneuvers event, representing the college they attend
- Skaters earn "team points" depending on their placement within their event(s).
- Skaters compete in events based on their U.S. Figure Skating test level or competitive floor.
- All skaters must be full-time college students, as defined by the institution that they attend.
- Each team attends the three competitions held in their assigned conference.
- The four teams that earn the most points throughout the season in each conference are invited to compete at the National Intercollegiate Final, held in April.
