Special Achievement Awards

The U.S. Figure Skating Special Achievement Awards are pins given to juvenile, intermediate and novice athletes to encourage performance-related markers in their programs at the Regional and Sectional Challenges. Awards are given out during the qualifying round free skate events, short program events and final round free skate events at the Regional Challenges for singles athletes and Dance and Pairs Challenges for pairs and ice dance athletes.

Singles Awards

For 2020, Special Achievement Awards pins will be awarded for juvenile, intermediate and novice qualifying round free skate, short program and final round free skate events.

Pins will be awarded for the following the first time each is achieved:

  • The skater in each group with the highest combined point total for spins
  • The skater in each group with the highest total Skating Skills mark
  • The skater in each group with the highest total Performance mark
  • Every skater that earns at least two +4’s or higher for an element
  • Every juvenile or intermediate skater that earns a jump point bonus by executing a CLEAN double Axel or triple (no falls, no edge attention and no underrotation, -2 GOE trimmed mean or higher as described in the current rulebook)

Pins will be awarded for the first execution or achievement of the criteria. Each athlete will be eligible to receive up to one pin for each of the above criteria; therefore, the maximum number of pins an athlete can receive at a Regional Challenge is five.

Free Dance and Pairs Free Skate Awards:

For 2020, Special Achievement Awards will be awarded in juvenile, intermediate and novice free dance and pairs free skate events.

Free Dance Awards

  • The couple in each event with the highest point total for twizzles
  • The couple in each event with the highest point total for lifts
  • Every couple that achieves a level 2 or higher for the step sequence (intermediate and novice)
  • Every couple that earns at least one +3 GOE or higher from any judge

Pairs Free Skate Awards:

  • The team in each event with the highest point total for Skating Skills 
  • The team in each event with the highest point total for a Step Sequence or Choreo Sequence
  • Every team that earns at least one +3 GOE or higher from any judge
  • The team in each event with the highest point total on a jump element
  • The juvenile team with the highest point total for their pair spin
  • The intermediate team with the highest point total for their death spiral
  • The novice team with the highest point total for their overhead lift
Pins will be awarded for the first execution or achievement of the criteria. Athletes will only be eligible to receive an award for each of the above criteria once.
