"We're Ready" - Wisconsin Clubs Salute Winter Games with Special Shows

The Olympic Games are just around the corner, but many clubs across the country are already feeling the Olympic spirit, sponsoring special events from Skate-A-Thons, to get-acquainted receptions and Olympic-themed shows. Two Wisconsin clubs are busily preparing spring ice shows that will pay tribute to the upcoming Games.

Marshfield Silver Laces Figure Skating Club in Marshfield, Wisconsin, will present their show "Going for the Gold" March 3-4 at the Marshfield Ice Rink.

"Two years ago, after an ice show, a parent was asking about themes for next year," said head coach Danielle Hall. "One of the skaters said 'What about the Olympics?' I suggested to our board that we wait until 2018 because our ice show is just a few weeks after the Olympics. We hope the audience will still be in the Olympic mindset and enjoy celebrating the themes and sports involved with the Games."

The club began preparing their show in October and all music will have an Olympic theme from Gavin DeGraw's "She Sets the City on Fire" to Andra Day’s "Rise Up" and Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire."

"We will have a torch and cauldron as part of our backdrop, a podium, flags and Olympic rings, too," Hall said. "Our coaches received their music and group assignments two weeks ago and are busily working on choreography. It really takes a big team effort to make every aspect of the show run smoothly and we could not do it without the support of everyone involved."

Throughout the show, spectators will also be able to purchase flowers, stuffed animals and other gifts to honor their favorite skaters. Local businesses are advertising the show and each skater will receive their own tee shirt with the show's emblem.

Hall hopes the show will be a sellout as in previous years.

"I do think the show will continue to celebrate the Olympic spirit and hopefully encourage more young skaters to be enthusiastic and want to try skating," Hall said.

The Figure Skating Club of Madison will also be "Going for Gold" during their April 14 show.

"Our theme was inspired by the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics," said club secretary Katrina Ladopoulos. "Every skater dreams about winning the gold medal for their country. Our skaters are excited to see their favorite skaters strive for the podium. We picked the theme 'Going for Gold' to express our drive and determination to improve our skills and achieve our personal goals."

The show will feature large and small groups of skaters in 24 numbers. Skaters range in age from five to adult. The club's synchronized skating teams, Synchro Skills 1 to Intermediate to Open Adult will also perform.

"We chose music with themes of inspiration, determination and achievement such as 'Eye of the Tiger,' 'Roar' and 'I Got a Feeling,'" Ladopoulos said. "Our rink and lobby will be decorated with gold and Olympic symbols. The show will take place after the Winter Olympics, but the overall theme and the experience of recently watching the Olympics will inspire our skaters to put on an extra special show this year."
