Sarah Hughes Leads List of Student-Athletes on 2003 Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team
The USFSA and Chevrolet Motor Division announced the 2003 Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team recognizing top student-athletes in figure skating. The 12 team members were recognized during a special ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the 2003 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the main events arena in Dallas, Texas.
2003 Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team CRITERIA
Applicants were required to meet the following criteria:
- Be an eligible skater and current member of the USFSA.
- Be a full-time student entering the Junior or Senior year of High School in the fall of 2000. Applicant must be enrolled in a fully accredited secondary school, attend classes and carry the minimum number of credit hours necessary to be a full-time student.
- Maintain at least a 3.4 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) or 93% (based on a 100% scale) during the last two years.
- Must have competed in a USFSA qualifying competition at the Novice, Junior or Senior level during the past two years.
2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes (Great Neck, N.Y./Skating Club of New York), leads the distinguished dozen honorees who have been selected for their achievements both as athletes and as scholars. During the 2002-03 competition season, Hughes combined excellence both on and off the ice, carrying a 3.9 GPA at Great Neck High School while training and competing for her eventual gold medal performance in Salt Lake City. The USFSA/Chevrolet Scholastic Honors Team is the latest in a number of distinctions for Hughes since the Olympics.
In addition to Hughes, the list of honorees include Felicia Beck (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Los Angeles FSC); Victoria Devins (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skating Club of Boston); Jennifer Don (Sugar Land, Texas/Yarmouth Ice Club); Loren-Galler Rabinowitz (Brookline, Mass./Skating Club of Boston); Alicia Heelan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Skating Club of Vail); Lisa Horstman (Glenellyn, Ill/DuPage FSC); Tatiana Klunchoo (Las Flores, Calif./Orange County FSC); Meghan McCullough (Alexandria, Va./Washington FSC); John Serpe (Richmond, Va./Washington FSC); Leo Ungar (Palo Alto, Calif./Peninsula SC); Tiffany Vise (Colorado Springs, Colo./Broadmoor SC).

This year marks the seventh year of Chevrolet's involvement in the program. Chevrolet, in conjunction with the USFSA, will be providing scholarships to all team members and a 2003 Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team letter jacket.

The Honors Team program is open to all full-time high school juniors and seniors who have competed at either the novice, junior or championship levels at USFSA events.
Athletes from all disciplines – men's and ladies singles, pairs, ice dancing and synchronized team skating – are eligible for the program.
This year marks the seventh year of Chevrolet's involvement in the program. Chevrolet, in conjunction with the USFSA, will be providing scholarships to all team members and a 2002 Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team letter jacket.

In addition to the application, the candidates submitted a written essay and two letters of recommendation, one from a school official and one from an individual involved in the sport of figure skating.
