In preparation for the 2004 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Atlanta, two-time World silver medalist Timothy Goebel and 2003 ISU Grand Prix Final champion Sasha Cohen, along with local Atlanta skaters, had a chance to test the ice of Philips Arena May 5. The May 6 Chevy Champions on Ice stop in Atlanta, with which Goebel and Cohen are currently touring, was a perfect opportunity to test the ice for the national event, which will be held in Atlanta at the Philips Arena Jan. 3-11, 2004.

Goebel and Cohen met with the local media and discussed their participation in Champions on Ice and in the upcoming U.S. Championships. They also had a special practice time in the arena for approximately 45 minutes. Several local skaters from the Atlanta Figure Skating Club and Georgia Figure Skating Club, who also plan to compete at the 2004 U.S. Championships, joined the world-class skaters for a media-only question and answer session and had the opportunity to ask Goebel and Cohen questions. The media also asked the local hopefuls what it would be like to compete at the U.S. Championships in their hometown. Cake was served after the question and answer session for the media and the skaters.

According to Dana Graham, chair for the Board of Directors for the 2004 U.S. Championships, Atlanta first hosted the national event in 1980.

"We're excited to return to Atlanta," Graham said. "Philips Arena is the ideal setting for the event, accommodating 18,500-plus fans that will travel from all parts of the U.S. to see the best-of-the-best of our country's amateur singles, pairs and ice dance skaters."

Tickets are now on sale now for the 2004 U.S. Championships. For more information visit the event web site at
