Czisny Withdraws from 2012 NHK Trophy

(11/14/12) - Alissa Czisny has withdrawn from 2012 NHK Trophy, Nov. 26-28, in Miyagi, Japan. She continues to recover from surgery she had in June to repair a torn labrum in her left hip.

Czisny is a two-time U.S. champion (2009, '11), the 2010 Grand Prix Final champion and an eight-time Grand Prix Series medalist.

Czisny hopes to compete at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She has a bye to the event based on her second-place finish at the 2012 U.S. Championships. The top five senior finishers in each discipline receive an automatic bye to the following year's championships. The 2013 U.S. Championships are set for Jan. 20-27, at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

Set to compete in Miyagi are Mirai Nagasu and Agnes Zawadzki (ladies), Richard Dornbush, Ross Miner and Adam Rippon (men's), Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, Lindsay Davis and Mark Ladwig and Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim (pairs) and Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani (ice dancing).

The Grand Prix Series, now in its 18th season, consists of six international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Approximately 300 athletes from 30 countries are expected to participate in the series. Each athlete is eligible to score points in up to two of the six scheduled events. The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the 2012 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, set for Dec. 6-9, in Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Athletes will compete for a total of more than $1.35 million in prize money throughout the series.
