Scimeca and Knierim Invited to 2012 NHK Trophy(11/9/12) - Alexa Scimeca & Chris Knierim have been invited to compete at 2012 NHK Trophy, Nov. 23-25, in Miyagi, Japan. They were invited after Caitlin Yankowskas & Joshua Reagan withdrew to injury.
Scimeca and Knierim announced their partnership in April and made their competitive debut in October when they won the 2012 Cup of Nice title. They are set to compete this weekend at the 2013 Midwestern Sectional Championships in Strongsville, Ohio.
Team USA will be represented by Alissa Czisny and Agnes Zawadzki (ladies), Richard Dornbush, Ross Miner and Adam Rippon (men's), Marissa Castelli & Simon Shnapir and Lindsay Davis & Mark Ladwig (pairs) and Meryl Davis & Charlie White and Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani (ice dancing).
Yankowskas and Reagan, who also teamed up in April, were forced to withdraw from both of their Grand Prix assignments, Cup of China and NHK Trophy, after Reagan sustained a rib injury in practice last month.
The Grand Prix Series, now in its 18th season, consists of six international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Approximately 300 athletes from 30 countries are expected to participate in the series. Each athlete is eligible to score points in up to two of the six scheduled events. The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the 2012 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, set for Dec. 6-9, in Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Athletes will compete for a total of more than $1.35 million in prize money throughout the series.
