Boardwalk Blog (#9)

(10/22/05) - Saturday, 3:16 p.m.

I don't think I've sat this long all week. After pairs practice, I came down to the media room to drop off video clips and get ready for tonight.

The bird is still flying around. Someone put out pretzels for it. I think it smiled.

3:19 p.m.

I hear music. They must be running the videos on the jumbotron.

Decision must be made regarding contact lenses. Out now? Out later? Do you care? Doubtful.

3:27 p.m.

Contacts out.

4:21 p.m.

Tiffany Stiegler & Sergei Magerovskiy make their way to the mixed zone. Tiffany gives a shout out to her brother, Johnny.

5:20 p.m.

Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder are in the mixed zone. It's a small group of reporters, and they seem to feel more comfortable talking in English to us. We get the grand tour of their free dance costumes, which are very cool. (Actually, they both tell us they are very hot.) Thick purple velvet with Mardi Gras-type beads hanging from them. Lots of stoning and hand painting. Their gloves are thick, too, with eyes and lips painted on them to mimic Carnival masks. One of the problems with the thickness of the gloves is they can't get a good grip on each other. They said they will need another outfit to practice in, since these are too ornate for everyday use.

I ask about the move that has them low and parallel to the ice. Isabelle says that they did have trouble getting out of that. It uses every ounce of abdominal muscles. She suggests that we try it there to demonstrate. We politely decline because… well… we're not insane.

6:19 p.m.

I've almost finished my free dance article. I look up and realize Emily Hughes is about to skate. Dash off to watch it on the monitor. Weird to travel to an event just to watch it on TV. But you gotta do what you've gotta do.

6:56 p.m.

Alissa Czisny is going into her final two elements and the crowd is insane. I literally get goosebumps listening to it. Moments like this are so cool.

7:14 p.m.

(superficial alert) Elena Sokolova has the best eyelashes. They are long and her mascara never runs. Must find out what she uses.

7:48 p.m.

I have a fan! A wonderful person read my blogs and sent me a goodie bag of chocolate. Wheeee! If this keeps up, will I need a posse by nationals? I've never had a posse.

8:56 p.m.

(superficial alert) Liz Putnam does her eyeshadow really well. Have made mental note for future use for self.

9:23 p.m.

Marcy Hinzmann & Aaron Parchem are about to skate. Tanith, Ben, and Alissa are watching on the monitor. They cheer wildly when the routine is over. Go Detroit!

10:27 p.m.

Medal ceremony is going on, and I'm working on my pairs free article. Elena Sokolova is on the podium singing the Russian Federation national anthem. Her eyes look like they have tears. Aww! I love emotional medal ceremonies.

10:32 p.m.

Just realized we heard four different countries' anthems at Skate America.

12:15 a.m.

Time to pack up for the night.
