Skaters Confirmed for 2005 Smart Ones Skate America

(8/17/05) - All skaters scheduled to compete at 2005 Smart Ones Skate America in Atlantic City, N.J., Oct. 20-23, are now confirmed, with the exception of one ice dancing team. Among those confirmed to compete are five-time World and nine-time U.S. champion Michelle Kwan and two-time World silver medalist Sasha Cohen. Kwan is a seven-time Skate America champion, having won the event from 1995-97 and 1999-2002 (she did not compete at it in 1998 or 2003-2004). Cohen won the event in 2003 the last time she competed in it.

Skate America is the first of six international stops in the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the six scheduled events. The top six point-earners in each of the four disciplines then qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo, Japan, Dec. 16-18. Athletes will vie for a total of $180,000 at Skate America and $1.35 million in prize money throughout the series and the Grand Prix Final.

Among those confirmed is the new addition of U.S. ice dancing team Jamie Silverstein and Ryan O'Meara. The new couple, coached by Igor Shpilband, placed first in the free dance by a four-point margin at the 2005 Lake Placid Ice Dancing Championships held Aug. 2-6. Silverstein is the 1999 World Junior champion with former partner Justin Pekarek, and O'Meara is the 2005 U.S. ice dancing bronze medalist with former partner Lydia Manon.
