Junior Pairs Meador and Merritt Withdraw From U.S. Championships
|Chelsea Meador and Alex Merritt|
(1/2/05) — 2005 Eastern Sectional junior pairs silver medalists Chelsea Meador & Alex Merritt have announced their withdrawal from the 2005 State Farm U.S. Championships, Jan. 9-16, in Portland, Ore., due to injury. Merritt suffered a laceration of his right forearm and tendons while skating on Dec. 7. Merritt underwent surgery to repair the damage and recently began physical therapy as well as on-ice training in the hope of competing at the U.S. Championships. Although the recovery and training were going well, a post-surgical infection arose on Christmas Eve which required additional surgery.
”This is a great disappointment for the entire team," Merritt said. "We have been skating so well all season, improving each day and working very hard in order to be at our peak for nationals. Chelsea and I would have loved for everyone to see how far we had come in just nine months together.
"I have an incredible partner, coaches (Phillip Mills and John Nicks), friends and family that have provided me a great deal of support and encouragement these last several weeks."
Meador and Merritt look forward to competing again soon and will return to the ice in several weeks in order to begin preparations for their second season together.
