(1/8/04) — Morgan Matthews and Maxim Zavozin (SC of New York) remain in first place at the State Farm U.S. Championships after winning the original dance Thursday afternoon. They're halfway to their second consecutive U.S. junior title.
In the original dance, they had a major stumble in the twizzle sequence when Matthews lost her balance and bumped into him.
"We decided to do our twizzles very close and then we ran into each other," Matthews said. "But we just kept going. We just hit hands."
"We didn't miss any elements though," Zavozin said.
The marks reflected in the technical scores, which ranged from 5.0 to 5.2. The pair skated to a medley that included the Little Richard classic "Tutti Frutti." For presentation, the marks went up a bit to the 5.4 to 5.5 range.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White (Detroit SC) were second. The highlight of their routine was the twizzles in opposite directions in the straight line step work.
"I think they were the only ones that had twizzles with multiple turns on different feet," said the team's coach, Seth Chafetz. "The three of us put that together. We wanted to make it more difficult. We went back to the rink and worked it out."
Chafetz said that they are trying to increase the difficulty of the routine for the future.
"They are looking for the technical mark in the original dance," Chafetz said. "It is just like the short program in freestyle. That technical mark is really important."
Trina Pratt and Todd Gilles (Broadmoor SC), last year's U.S. novice champions, finished in third.
The free dance is set for Friday, Jan. 9 at 1:10.m.
