Boston Awarded 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships

(6/10/13) - The International Skating Union (ISU) announced today that U.S. Figure Skating has been awarded a provisional allotment to host the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships March 28-April 3, at TD Garden in Boston. The Skating Club of Boston will work locally with U.S. Figure Skating to host the event.

"We are thrilled to welcome the best figure skaters in the world back to the United States," U.S. Figure Skating President Patricia St. Peter said. "We have a great tradition of hosting high caliber international events. We are confident the city of Boston and The Skating Club of Boston will welcome our figure skating family with the same excitement they have afforded to other domestic and international events in recent years."

Boston most recently hosted the 2013 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in April and is also set to welcome the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the final qualifying event prior to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, in January at TD Garden.

"The Skating Club of Boston is extremely pleased to have been chosen to work with U.S. Figure Skating to host the 2016 World Championships," Club President Joe Blount said. "In its 100-year history, The Skating Club of Boston has never hosted the World Championships. This will be a thrilling opportunity for all of us to welcome the world to Boston. We promise a memorable event both on and off the ice."

The World Championships will return to the United States for the first time since 2009 when the event was held at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The 2016 World Championships will mark the 13th time the event will be held in the U.S. and the first time it will be held in Boston. Hailed as figure skating's most prestigious annual event, the World Figure Skating Championships began in 1896, and have been held annually with the exception of during the World Wars. Approximately 160 skaters from more than 40 countries will compete in Boston.

More information on the 2016 World Championships, including how to secure tickets for the event, will be released at a later date.
