Team USA Earns Four Medals at the 2012 Gardena Spring Trophy

(4/15/12) - Team USA earned four medals at the 2012 Gardena Spring Trophy in Selva, Italy. In each of their respective international debuts, Barbie Long, Nathan Chen and Lukas Kaugars all won gold, while Mariah Bell earned the silver medal.

In the junior ladies event, Team USA finished in the top two spots as Long, the 2011 U.S. novice silver medalist and 2012 U.S. junior fourth place finisher, won both the short program and the free skate to finish with 133.25 points and the gold medal. Bell, who finished one spot behind Long at both the 2011 and 2012 U.S. Championships, placed second in both the short program and free skate to post 116.46 points and earn the silver medal.

In the men's event, Chen, the 2012 U.S. junior champion, competed at the novice level and rallied from a second place finish in the short program to win the gold medal. Trailing by less than half a point, Chen won the free skate by nearly 10. He finished with 129.45 points overall. Kaugars, who most recently placed fifth as a junior at the 2012 U.S. Championships, won both the short program and free skate of the junior men's event and earned 138.07 points and the gold medal.
