(9/2/03) – One of skating's most popular off-ice couples, John Zimmerman and Silvia Fontana, wed in Rome, Italy, Aug. 28, 2003.
Zimmerman, 29, a 2002 World bronze medalist and three-time U.S. champion with pairs partner Kyoko Ina, has not only become a skating heartthrob, but he has also begun enjoying significant success as a print model in New York City. Fontana, 26, known for her exquisitely defined beauty and elegant grace on the ice, is an Italian national champion. Both represented their countries at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
About 125 friends and family attended the nuptials held at The Basilica Saints Boniface and Alexis on the Aventine Hill, St. Alessio, next to Rome's legendary Coliseum. Approximately 30 of the guests traveled from the United States, including good friend and U.S. champion Michael Weiss.
It is said that Fontana's wedding gown was “classically” designed and is reminiscent of the late Grace Kelly's dress when she became Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco upon marrying Prince Rainier Grimaldi III of Monaco in 1956.
Once wed at St. Alessio, Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman were honored at a formal reception and sit-down dinner at a private villa on the outskirts of Rome.
Later this year, the Zimmermans will perform in Brian Boitano's Holiday Skating Spectacular in Las Vegas, Nev. Ina and Zimmerman, meanwhile, will be part of the 2004 Smucker's Stars on Ice Tour next year.
